What time does school start? What if I need to pick up my child or bring them late?
School starts at 8:30. During the school year, you may need to drop your child off late or pick him/her up early due to a sickness or an appointment. For the safety of the students and staff, all school doors are kept locked during the school day. Anyone entering the building must be buzzed in at the front door and wait in the school office until Mrs. Telesky or Mrs. Welch assist you. Thank you for your cooperation!
What time does school end? What if I can't pick up my child?
Dismissal is at 2:45. Please be on time! It is very confusing and upsetting for the students when they are left after the rest of the class has gone home. For your child’s safety, you will be asked to fill out a form telling us how they will get home (picked up/bus/aftercare program) and who is authorized to pick them up. If there are any changes in your child’s dismissal routine, such as leaving early or going home with a friend, please send a note to school with them that day.
How do I prevent my child from losing something?
Please label all of your child’s personal belongings with his/her name. Many students have difficulty telling similar items apart, especially new lunch boxes and book bags. You do not need to label classroom supplies, such as crayons and glue, as these items will be shared. If your child has lost something, please let us know or check the school lost and found, located in the cafeteria.
How do I find out about what is going on in my child's classroom?
Throughout the year, we will send home classroom newsletters and update our teacher websites to keep you informed about what we are learning, things to practice at home, reminders, and information about special events. Please check your child’s folder each day for important memos as well as their daily work.
Does my child need to bring a snack to school?
Yes. Please send a healthy snack with your child each day. We suggest fruit, vegetables, crackers, and other healthy foods as this is the age when children start to develop their lifetime eating habits. Students do not need juice boxes or other drinks as we have water fountains in the classroom.
What should I pack my child for lunch?
Students may bring or get their lunch from the cafeteria. We will have lunch on half days. Students getting lunch or milk should know their lunch number. Breakfast and lunch is free to all students at Turnpike Elementary. However, it is still required that you complete a lunch application form for your child.
Can I send a snack in for the class on my child's birthday? Can my child pass out birthday invitations?
If you would like to send in a treat on or near your child’s birthday, we will be happy to have a short celebration with the class at snack time. We ask that you let us know in advance so we can make arrangements for food allergies/restrictions. We ask that you do not send full sized cakes, as we do not have the tools for cutting and serving. Individual portion sized treats work best. How about fruit, popcorn, ice cream pops or cookies? Feel free to be creative and send something that your child really likes. Please be aware that all food items sent to school to be shared must be store bought, not homemade. Unless, the entire class is invited, we prefer that party invitations be distributed outside of school. Feelings can be easily hurt! Also, if your child does not celebrate birthdays, please let us know.
How do I help my child with reading?
One way is to order books from Scholastic Books. We will periodically send home book club order forms home with your child. You are not obligated to purchase books, but we encourage you to take advantage of the low prices to add to your home library. If you would like to order, please return the completed form along with payment (cash or check payable to the book club) in an envelope labeled with your child’s name by the date listed on the flyer. Each purchase allows us to accumulate bonus points towards books and other items for our classroom. Happy reading!
Can my child bring his/her toys to school?
Please do not send toys to school with your child unless specifically requested by your child’s teacher. Our classrooms have plenty of toys and materials for the children to use during the school day.
What if my child has an accident, gets muddy, or spills something on his/her clothes?
Some students have lunchtime spills and/or bathroom accidents while adjusting to a full day of school and new routine. Please send in a change of clothes (underwear, socks, pants) in a labeled Ziploc bag. We will either keep it in the classroom or in the bottom of your child’s bookbag where they will have access to it, if needed.
